Understanding Ashtakoota Guna Milan
The Ashtakoota system evaluates compatibility across 8 categories (Kootas), each weighted differently. A higher total score indicates stronger astrological compatibility — but Dosha checks (especially Nadi, Bhakoot, and Mangal) are equally critical.
Varna
Spiritual compatibility and ego balance.
Vashya
Mutual attraction, control, and dependence.
Tara
Health, well-being, and fortune compatibility.
Yoni
Physical and sexual compatibility.
Graha Maitri
Mental friendship and intellectual harmony.
Gana
Temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa).
Bhakoot
Emotional compatibility and family welfare.
Nadi
Health and progeny. Highest weight in the system.
Mangal Dosha — Myth vs Reality
Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Lagna (or Moon) chart. It is often misunderstood as an absolute negative.
Mangal Dosha CAN be cancelled if: the partner is also Manglik, Mars is in its own sign (Aries/Scorpio), Mars is exalted (Capricorn), or Mars is aspected by benefics. Our report checks all these cancellation conditions automatically using classical rules.
Kundli Matching — Frequently Asked Questions
Kundli Matching (Gun Milan) is the traditional Vedic Astrology method for checking marriage compatibility. It uses the Ashtakoota system — 8 categories covering temperament, health, progeny, emotional compatibility, and spiritual alignment — scored out of 36 Gunas. It helps identify potential challenges before marriage and suggests remedial measures when needed.
A score of 18/36 is the traditional minimum threshold. Scores of 18–24 indicate acceptable compatibility with conscious effort. Scores of 25–32 are good. Above 32 is considered excellent. However, score alone is not sufficient — Dosha analysis (especially Nadi and Bhakoot) must also be checked.
Mangal Dosha can often be cancelled (Dosha Nivarana) by several conditions: (1) both partners are Manglik, (2) Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), (3) Mars is exalted in Capricorn, (4) Mars is aspected by Jupiter. Our report checks all standard cancellation rules automatically and explains the logic transparently.
Nadi Dosha (when both partners share the same Nadi) is the highest-weighted dosha in Ashtakoota (8 points) and is considered significant as it affects health and progeny. However, Nadi Dosha Parihar (exceptions) exist — for example, if the partners' Moon Nakshatras are the same, or if the Moon signs differ. Our report shows whether Parihar applies.
The report includes: (1) Full 8-Koota breakdown showing scores for each attribute (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi), (2) Total Guna score out of 36, (3) Mangal Dosha status for both individuals with cancellation check, (4) Nadi Dosha and Bhakoot Dosha analysis, (5) Plain-English compatibility summary, and (6) Growth areas and insights.
Free sites typically show only a total score without Dosha cancellation logic. Kundli.io applies classical Dosha cancellation rules (checking if Mangal Dosha is nullified by position), explains each Koota score separately, and provides a PDF report with transparent methodology — the same standards a professional astrologer uses.
